Napoleon Napoleonic Consular Campaign Chair French Paris EXTREMELY RARE. Circa 1800. Dimensions: Height: 34-1/8” Width (maximum): 16-5/8” Depth (at feet): 15-3/4” Side Chair: Carved and painted beech wood with patterned black horsehair upholstery, brass tacks: Consular style, France, probably Paris, by an unidentified menuisier.   The X-form under supports designed to appear foldable; the square backs centered with a carved relief trophy of a shield over crossed swords, all centered on a narrow vertical splat. The frame painted in glazed grey in white, which has discoloured with age. The seat upholstered in black patterned horsehair with a decorative row of tack heads above the seat rail.   Condition: Remarkably well preserved for their age and rarity. Scattered expected general wear and abrasion in paint.   Minor scattered wear in paint surface, particularly at outer             A.     edges of stiles, crest rail, legs. Age wear on stretcher edges. Some (old) abrasion wear at proper left front leg at “toe”. Abrasion wear at front right and left seat rail.             B.     Traces of a blue paint apparent on the proper left stile and crest rail. In-painted repair to burn(?) in horsehair upholstery, front centre. One (old) abrasion on proper right leg, front, at “toe”. Expected age wear on stretcher edges. 3” splinter abrasion at right and left rear legs, outer edge, at “toe”.   A little history on the chairs. They are inherited; and the story handed down is that there were six of these chairs ordered by Napoleon as gifts for his Consular Generals. Four have been inherited and handed down for over 75 years now. They are on loan to a prominent American museum where they have been since 1985.
