The book of hours was, from the 14th to the 16th centuries, the prayerbook that the pious laity used during meditative hours of the day. Only nobles and rich merchants could afford to order such books as were hand-written and illuminated by leading artists. Miniature books of hours were even more uncommon and were reserved for artistic enjoyment as well as religious use. Their decoration included numerous superb illuminations. Vat. Ross. 94 is distinctive not only for its remarkable beauty and the rich detail of its ornamention, but also for its tiny format.
