Description
Hey folks!!! Up for bid is a wonderful piece!!! I do not know the where it originated from or what ship it was on?? I can only tell you what I was told an what is on paper. I purchased the lantern earlier this year from an elderly couple that were moving into an assisted living center here in Topeka, Ks. Marine Bulkhead Lantern (Brass) Lanterns of this type were used for illumination on board ships before the invention of electric lamps. They belong to a picturesque period in the past, during which the American merchant marine was of the first rank on the seas. The few remaining specimens are practically all in private collections and museums, of which the Huntington Marine Museum at Newport News, Virginia is the most notable. Ceased making in 1859 Mrs. Robert H. Jones - Topeka Ks. Ray was fortunate enough to purchase two from his friend Col. Mc Garrety for $150.00 each. They were sent to us before Washburn Avenue was changed to Medford Street. (One was for us - the other was for Ray and Nina). *Street name changed March 1, 1938* I recently contacted the above named Museum, they had stated to me that there name had changed many many years ago and said that they only have one maybe two of the extraordinary lanterns on exhibit at this time, I know the couple I purchased it from have had this lantern for at least 70 plus years and have not changed it or cleaned it in any way - stated also that they had the lantern hanging on there patio and using it until I purchased it earlier this year. The outside (housing) overall stands 19 inches high - 8 1/2 inches deep - 11 1/4 inches wide, the lantern with the chimney is 10 inches high - w/o chimney 5 inches high and is 5 inches round not including the finger hole and the chimney has (pearl glass) written on it - the knob that you turn for the wick to move states (E Miller - made in the USA)on it. The lantern itself as a whole is in wonderful condition for the age - the only things that may not be original is the glass pane in the door and the chimney - the only part that may need to be fixed (or not) are the 2 of the strips on the front part of the cage (I call it that) that protects the glass need to be rewelded, they have broke away from the cage, it does not take away from the lantern as a whole. If you have any questions or would like to see more pictures of this item please feel free to contact me, I will try to answer ASAP. I will only accept Pay Pal on this auction - when auction is completed I will contact you, insurance is not included in the shipping price - insurance is mandatory - that will be figured in when the auction has concluded. Return policy is 7 days from recieving the item. Thank you!! Good Luck!!! Happy Bidding!!!
