Gand, au local de la Société, 1846-1848 3 volumes. Royal-8vo. With approx. 184 (some folding) hand colored lithographed plates or chromolithographed plates with extensive hand-finishing. Contemporary red morocco, gilt decorated spines, marbled boards Overall condition: excellent. No browning , no foxing. All the plates have tissue guards. Historical Background A handsome set with excellent impressions of the plates. Exquisite series of the most attractive botanical images (please see below), including roses, camellias, orchids, amaryllis, azaleas, cherries, plums, etc. Belgium saw a remarkable revival of botany and plant cultivation during the 19th century. In 'Hortus Belgicus' this period is called 'the wonder of the 19th century'. The town of Gand was its center. The famous establishment of Louis Van Houtte was located there. Belgian lithographers reached the ultimate of craftsmanship in a relatively short period in which color printing from stone dominated the scene of botanical illustration. Charles Morren the editor of the present work was professor of botany at Liege. 'Le professeur gantois, Charles Morren (1807-1858), est sans conteste un des principaux promoteurs - sinon le plus important - de ce renouveau de l'horticulture belge. Ses écrits et ceux de son fils Edouard, qui poursuivit ses travaux avec ardeur, constituent un trésor quasi inépuisable de documentation pour l'histoire de la botanique et de l'horticulture en Belgique' (l'Orchidée en Belgique p. 31).
