SAN FELIPE - 1690 The San Felipe Launched in 1690, was one of the most beautiful Spanish ships of the XVII century.  The San Felipe weighed more than 1000 tons and was armed with 96 cannons, enabling her to take on the most formidable ships in the French and British navy.  As lead ship, the San Felipe’s role in the war against the British and French was to help protect Spanish settlements and harbors.  At the same time, she provided protection for ships in their long and hazardous passage back to Spanish ports with their plunder of treasures from the Caribbean and South America.  In 1705, she participated in a furious and heroic battle between 12 Spanish ships and 35 British ships. After 24 hours of battle, she was captured by a British ship but, was so badly damaged that she could not be salvaged as a prize. She went to the bottom with several tons of gold. Only the highest quality woods such as rosewood, ebony, blackwood, mahogany and teak are used in building the model ships. In general, this is how the following woods are used:Ebony (for blocks and small details) English Sycamore (for the hull)Rosewood (for the hull)Blackwood (for the hull)Mahogany (for the masts, squares, crow nests)Cherrywood (for the deck)Canons, muskets, anchors and other tiny details are made of metal (for decoration)Sails and rigging lines are made of linen. The model is handmade from scratch by skilled craftsmen and it's built according to scale of the original ship, through original plans or pictures using plank on frame construction. The hull is joined by multi-pieces of dry thin wooden bar together. Inside the hull a special glue is used which helps thin wooden bars stay close to one another and not split, crack or twist when the weather changes. The construction method is entirely by hand and it takes hundreds of man hours by an artisan to finish. THE MODEL SHIP IS NOT A TOY AND SHOULD BE KEPT AWAY FROM CHILDREN.
