MID 19thC FRENCH TOILE CUSHION PILLOW STORY OF HADES 2 We are delighted to offer a rare opportunity to own a beautiful pillow made from an early French toile circa 1850/60 that tells the story of 'HADES'"Charon, in Greek mythology, is the ferryman of the dead. The souls of the deceased are brought to him by Hermes and Charon then rows them across the river Acheron (Styx) to Hades' kingdom - one of the five rivers that flow through the realm of Hades (God of the underworld). The name Acheron means 'river of woe' and is often metaphorically used for Hades itself. Charon is depicted as a sulky old man, or as a winged demon carrying a double hammer". The 'madder' vignettes on an off white ground are printed with precision detail and although new and mass produced toiles are very nice, they are simply not in the same league as these old ones.The cushion is trimmed with vintage French dusky pink and white cotton ball passementerie - we only use antique or vintage trims to embellish our pillows - never repro - as our personal feeling is that older textiles deserve older trims to compliment them.The reverse of the cushion is antique French homespun off white linen and closes with an envelope style flap so that the feather and down inner can be removed prior to laundering if the need should arise. An exquisite pillow that will work in many room settings including antique, vintage, French country, and themed rooms.
