Description
This is a mid 19th.c. "George II" style carved Giltwood Dolphin Console Table with Green "Verde Rameggiato" marble top. This is one very high end antique piece of furniture that is usually sold in the rooms of Sotheby's and Christies and the auction estimates for those are through the roof. I am happy to offer this Neoclassic stunner on Ebay for a fraction of the high end auction house cost. This is an upstate New York estate find. It is a dolphin carved out of giltwood resting on a faux marble base [with 23k gilt borders] the fish has his back arched and is holding up the [at least 50 pound] slab of beautiful verde marble only with his fin, while from the front looking straight on with its mouth partly open revealing the most incredible artists carving, all done in wood. This piece is impossible to describe, you have to see it, you will fall in love with it. Because of the flawless construction the fish tail is holding the weight and could take a couple of more slabs of marble on top of it as well. It is that strong. The design was brilliant as again, the weight is taken on the center of the table with no problem. Now you would not want to lean heavy or put anything heavy on the immediate right of the tail or the immediate left-  but center - no problem and dispersing weight evenly across the top- no problem. You CAN put heavy items on top I am just trying to emphasize the main weight is made to be taken in the center as this is how the "fish" takes the 50+ pound marble without a bit of  stress. That is incredible workmanship. Please look at the pictures closely and ask me any questions, this is a rare and important piece of furniture for the discerning buyer. If you know what you are looking at you know these sell for a fortune if you are lucky enough to find one. The gilt finish has been "refreshed" by an absolute expert- 23 Karat highlights, he had the original finish to work with and stuck to that exactly. Dimensions-  34 inches high by 31 inches long by 20 inches deep and the marble is 1 - 1/2 inches thick.
