Description
A Particular Poet DESCRIPTION: PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO READ COMPLETE DESCRIPTION * MASCAGNI, Pietro [1863 – 1945, Italian] Composer Autograph Letter Signed [framed display] - Ardenza, June 1, 1920 - A letter, 2 pp., [in Italian] to Maestro Edoardo Mascheroni [1852-1941] written completely in Mascagni’s hand with fountain pen in black ink, signed, at the end, “P. Mascagni” and dated at the head “Ardenza, June 1, 1920”. This important letter represents reconciliation following a twenty- two year estranged relationship with Mascheroni, initiated by the infamous conflagrations between composer and conductor which had occurred during the rehearsals for the premiere performance of Mascagni’s opera Iris, in Rome, during November of 1898. Il Piccolo Marat is a subject of this letter; the opera proffered, it seems, as a peace offering in Mascagni’s reconciliation with Mascheroni. - Please refer to pages 119/120 (Iris Makes Its Debut) of Alan Mallach’s biography of the composer, entitled Pietro Mascagni and His Operas (Northeastern University Press, 2002): - http://books.google.com/books?id=kUCtUcFvr0IC&pg=RA1PA 119&lpg=PP1&dq=Pietro+Mascagni+and+His+Operas&ie=ISO -8859-1&output=html&sig=ACfU3U3IHvfsPstVZfgjfbcj0RpB9QF9iw - The following English translation of Mascagni’s letter, one of two provided (very slightly variant), is enclosed in an envelope attached to the back: -______________________________ - Ardenza – Livorno, 1 June 1920 - My dear Maestro Mascheroni, - Your letter was delayed in arriving, but I am still in time to tell you that I shall remain in Livorno all summer, and I shall be most happy to have you visit me here; and happier still to be able to go over “Il Piccolo Marat” together, hoping that you will soon give to this music of mine the distinction of your interpretation. - With regard to Claudetti’s refusal, let me repeat that I was truly saddened by it, particularly since I could find no logic in the reason offered me: when an opera is twenty-two years old, it can no longer be called a new opera, even in those places where it has yet to be performed; and all the more because we are speaking of a piece which all the bands of the world are capable of playing without the least difficulty. - It is always difficult to reason with publishers, however. - I have heard of your triumphant season at Perugia; my compliments to you. - I shall expect you soon in Livorno. In the meantime, I send warm greetings from my wife, as well as an affectionate embrace - from your - P. Mascagni _______________________________ - The letter is mounted with a photograph (Guigoni & Rossi, Milano) of the composer as a framed display, measuring 13 x 22 inches to the outer frame edges. The double mat passe-partout exposes 6.50 x 10.5 inches of the letter, comprised of a single sheet of stationery vertically folded to create the two pages. The professional photograph measure 5.5 x 4 inches. - While there is slight wrinkling to the lower left corner of the first page, the letter is otherwise in outstanding, fine condition with one faint horizontal mailing fold. The photograph is also in fine condition. - - Mascagni was only twenty-six years of age when the electrifying premiere of his Cavalleria Rusticana, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, catapulted the impoverished musician into sudden fame and fortune. Mascagni went on to write fifteen more operas, including L'Amico Fritz, Guglielmo Ratcliff, Iris, Parisina and Il Piccolo Marat. - Inventory #: 09MAS1920 MU - PRICE: $ 2450.00 USD - Please realize that images may deviate somewhat from actual color tone due to lighting conditions and computer interpretations and limitations. - You may contact seller through the "Ask Seller a Question" link. - Thank you for your interest in this auction and we invite you to visit our eBay Store.
