Description
Three original antique U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Topographic maps of areas of LOUISANA east of New Orleans showing St. Bernard and Tammany Parish as well as portions of Hancock County Mississippi.  These maps were originally published in the early 1890s by the USGS and these are USGS reprints from 1901, '02.  Most importantly, the surveys used for making these maps was completed in 1890-'92 and not updated for publication at either printing.  So, these maps represent a "snapshot" of this area east of New Orleans around Lake Borgne as of 120 years ago.  These maps are excellent research tools as they include valuable irrecoverable information about the area.  Also, given their historical status as artifacts of a bygone era the maps are eminently suited for framing and display.  These topographic maps show physical features by use of contour lines and shading as well as symbols to represent some features.  Cultural and economic features such as towns, schools, churches, cemetaries, farms, some factories, mines, harbors, political boundaries, etc. are also depicted, as well as lines of communication (roads, railroads, etc.).  Since settlement in this area was so sparse at that time individual houses and principal outbuildings are shown as well in areas outside of immediate town or village boundaries. Water bodies such as the ocean, bays, sounds, channels, rivers, creeks, brooks, ponds, swamps, are also depicted and show the extent of water coverage and or coastal features.  During this age of mapmaking the original plates were hand-engraved.  Each map measures 16 1/4" X 20 1/4", is marked with the stamp of the US Bureau of Reclamation and the word DISCARD in blue.  Each map, its principal cultural, economic, and physical features illustrated are listed below along with a description of each maps condition.  These maps are over 100 years old, they show use and are basicalle very fragile and should be handles with care.     -- RIGOLETS SHEET, surveyed 1892, published July 1893, reprinted without changes Aug. 1902.  Principal place names include, but are not limited to: Lake St. Catharine, St. Catharine Pass, Lake Borgne, The Rigolets, St. Tammany Parish, Handcock Co. Mississippi, Pearl River, Pole Cat Bend, Pearl River Island, West Pearl River, Lookout, Claiborne, Alligator Point, Louisville and Nashville Railroad, and many more other features.  This map is in good condition showing handling and wear with some edge wear to each side mostly consisting of minor 1/4" to 1/2" tears on the margin and bumps and/or creases at the very edge from handling.  The face of the map, that is the engraved portion, is in excellent condition.     -- TOULME SHEET, surveyed 1892, published May 1893, reprinted October 1901.  Principal features include but are not limited to: Heron Bay, Mississippi SOund, Grand Island, Grand Island Pass, St. Joseph Island, St. Joseph Island Light, Round Island, Merrill Shell Bank and Light, St. Bernard Parish, Drum Bayor Bay, Bodreau, Johnson Bayou, Shell Island, Nine Mile Bayou, Le Petit Pass, Le Petit Island, Louisville and Nashville RR., and others.  This map is in basically good condition, showing use and handling.  There is some edge wear principally to the right and bottom edges which is small tears and wrinkles to the very edge.  At the bottom edge are two tears about 1" long  which do not intrude into the engraved portion of the map but do touch the scale of miles.  Also, this sheet is slightly darkened probably from exposure to sunlight.      -- SHELL BEACH SHEET, surveyed in 1890, published in 1893, reprinted without change in 1902.  Principal features include but are not limited to: Lake Borgne, Point aux Marchettes, Grand Bayou, Bayou St. Malo, Bayou La Loutre, Yscloskey, Hopedale, Lake Amede, Lake Jean Louis robin, several features marked "Artificial Mound", and other lagoons, bayous, branches, etc., etc.  This map sheet is in relatively poor condition as it is the only one of the three to have a minor repair.  On the lower right side is a piece about 1" square that was torn off and re-attached with small pieces of scotch tape on the back.  There is also a 1 1/2" tear to the bottom but only to the margin, and othere smaller tears to the margin.  The top and much of the rest of the margins are intact and the actual engraved map portion is intact and undamaged with the minor exception of the tear to the lower right side.  Please see my other auctions for the similar maps of New Orleans and the Mississippi river area to the south of the city to the delta.Maps will be shipped rolled in a tube via USPS Media Mail insured, high bidder pays shipping.
