Description
Original U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Topographic map of the area of Connecticut and Long Island Sound that surrounds and includes the coast from southwest of and including Norwalk and on northeast to past Southport Connecticut. This map was originally published in 1893 by the USGS and this copy is an original USGS 1906 reprint of that edition. Most importantly, the survey used for making this map was completed in 1890 and NOT updated for publication. So, this map represents a "snapshot" of this area of the Atlantic Coast as of almost 120 years ago. This map is an excellent research tool as it includes valuable information about the area. Also, given its historical status as an artifact of the era, it is eminently suitable for framing and display. These topographic maps show physical features by use of contour lines and shading as well as symbols to represent some features. Cultural and economic features such as towns, schools, churches, cemetaries, farms, some factories, mines, harbors, political boundaries, etc. are also depicted, as well as lines of communication (roads, railroads, etc.). Water bodies such as the ocean, bays, sounds, channels, rivers, creeks, brooks, ponds, swamps, are also depicted and show the extent of water coverage and or coastal features. During this age of mapmaking the original plates were hand-engraved. Cultural, economic, and physical features depicted on this map include, but are not limited to: Long Island Sound, Norwalk River, Saugantuck river, Mill River, Five Mile River, Norwalk, South Norwalk, East Norwalk, Rowanton, Darien, New Canaan, South Wilton, Four and Five Croners, Winnipank, Westport, Sangatuck, Greens Farm, Mill Plain, Fairfield, Southport, Pine Creek Point, Alvord Beach, Sherwood Point, Compo Hill, Cedar Point, Cockenoe Island, Norwalk Islands, Gregory Point, Long Neck Point, The Rocks, Grumman Hill, Sturgis Ridge, Greenfield Hill, and numerous other place names and features too numerous to mention. Map measures 16 1/4" X 20 1/4", is marked as shown below, is in very good condition with some minor edge tears (1/4") and nicks, one small piece of the lower left corner missing. There is a edge tear, pictured, of about 1 1/4" up diagonal from right edge, this is only on the margin, does not intrude onto the map itself; with matting and proper mounting and framing this will not be noticeable. Map will be shipped rolled in a tube via USPS Priority Mail insured, high bidder pays shipping.
