Missouri Compromise Page 4 has a significant report, being the printing of the Act of Congress which would allow Maine to join the Union, headed: * AN ACT for the admission of the state of Maine into the Union Maine became a state as a result of the Missouri Compromise, whereby Missouri joined as a slave state while being balanced by Maine joining as a free state. Maine would formally join the Union on March 15. This official Act of Congress is signed in type by the President: James Monroe and is headed with a nice engraving of a heraldic eagle (see).
