Description
Kuba mask Pwoom Itok helmet - Fine African Art The Kuba kingdom has carefully memorized its traditions and has passed them down through court historians since the 16th century. The Kuba masks represent the spirits of nature. They are sacred and used during funerals, enthronements of chiefs or of kings and during initiation rituals. They are the property of the king and of high-ranking dignitaries. Often in the shape of helmets, Kuba masks are used during appearances of the king and to replay the mythical and mystical history of the foundation of the Kuba kingdom.     This mask has a rich aged surface patina. It is an excellent testimony of the very high artistic skill and the power of geniune kuba works.   SIZE: 17 inches height/ 11 inches diameter (41x18 cms) ESTIMATED AGE: 30-40 years.
