It is in the gargoyle pattern, which also features dolphins on the feet. I have seen other pieces of holloware in this exact motif. I believe it was either a master salt or a sewing notion-- maybe a pincushion with a hidden area? If it was a pincushion, it would have had a puffy piece which is missing. It is 4 inches in diameter by 2 and 1/2 inches high. Marked with the AZ maker's mark, Sterling and 669. Inside has a wooden holder covered by red velvet. Age has dried both and created a gap. I do not know if it was originally a master salt, dresser jar or sewing item. I would love to hear your opinion! No monograms or engraving. Very good estate condition with tarnish.
