HANDMADE in country, this ONE of a KIND item was created and worn, in country, in ceremony. Made from 70%-85% SILVER (from melted Silver Coins) this is an ANTIQUE (50-60 years) and generally appears old, with a delightful patina. In the photos you can see the item, and also the dimensions. This Necklace Breastplate Medallion weighs: 28g In the last photos you can see an approximate layout of where the different tribal peoples live in Central Asia, and you can see there is close proximity of the KUTCH peoples of GUJARAT, to the BANJARA peoples of RAJASTHAN slightly to the north, as well as how the traditional KUTCH people wear these types of silver jewelry items. In KUTCH tribal culture, these silver jewelry items are crucially important. These jewels are passed from one generation to next generation and then too are given to a daughter in her wedding. The area of Kutch in Gujarat is an arid scrubland which is a far cry from the verdant hills and lush vegetation of eastern or southern India. As if to compensate for that bleached landscape, kutch is a repository of craft and color, home to some of the most spectacular jewelry in India, a living tradition that is seen to this day. In all her finery, a woman might bear some three kilos or more of silver, but bear it she does, even in the remorseless heat of summer...Just for an example, in the Meghwal community of Banni, the jewellery is set against another kind of richness, that of embroidered garments whose colors are gem like and precisely patterned, where inset mirror work flashes in the light of the sun. A Meghwal woman is a master of embroidery, just as her husband is skilled in leathercraft. An essential part of her jewelery repertoire is the varlo, a stiff and heavy necklace of twisted silver wires. The varlo is worn along with a choker of beads- beadwork is another speciality- and many other necklaces. The intricate gold nose ring, the velado, is a sign of marriage and worn only on special occasions. Ivory bangles (now more likely to be plastic) crowd her upper and lower arms. Young girls nearing puberty are often heavily ornamented to enhance their attractiveness as possible brides as there these girls are married at very tender ages. We have in this lot several different amulets, containing mantras. The amulets are universally worn in the lifetime battle of subduing external and internal evil spirits. The KUTCH people live in an extreme environment similar to the Banjara in the Rajasthan Desert to the North. In the Southern Gujarat the temperatures range from 1C (32F) in winter to 48C (119F) in summer. However, the rainfall is more variable, being extremely dry for most of the year, then 250-500mm (10-20 inches) of rain will fall in a 5-12 day period, causing flooding and erosion. During the monsoon season, the region of KUTCH will become an island, separated from the Kathiawar Peninsula, and from the Sindh region of Pakistan by the great Rann of Kutch.
