Description
Louise Saunders, Charles Scribner's Sons 1925.Very good 11 1/2" x 14" black cloth with full page title picture pasted on. Spine blank. Very mild (almost imperceptible) bumping of corners or rubbed edges. The paste-on picture edge toward spine has mild rubbing and there is a very small scratch (about 1/4") on heart shape -upper left side/very/ light scratch on right figure in picture/and tiny spot on right spoon. Some light foxing throughout as one would expect of a book this age and coated paper. Pictorial endpapers are Parrish's "Romance" a wonderful example of his use of light and shadows, and distinctive Parrish blues. Coy Ludwig indicates that this was favored by Parrish over and above the famous "Daybreak" -- "he was pleased that it had some qualities of 'real illumination.' " (Maxfield Parrish by Coy Ludwig). The meld of magnificent color, whimsical figures and poignancy in Parrish's art is unrivaled and it is particularly appropriate, grand and gorgeous in this wonderful depiction of Louise Saunder's play. According to Coy Ludwig, the book was considered "successful in every standpoint except one, and that was sales. The ten-dollar price seemed to some people too expensive for a children's book, but the major factor that hampered the book sales was its size. It was too large for the average bookshelf.." Luminous reds, black and white checks, bright yellows -- all fairly glow in 23 illustrations --pages on the right side of the text (blank reverse). A feast for the eyes and heart!!
