Description
FINEST MEIJI JAPANESE STERLING SILVER IRIS TEA SET; LAVISHLY CARVED IRIS ALONG GENTLE STREAM, WITH FOOT BRIDGE; OTHER SIDE DISPLAYS IRIS AMIDST GARDEN GATE; HAND HAMMERED BACKGROUND; FLORAL BRANCH FORM SWING HANDLE, WITH IRIS PETAL TERMINALS; SIGNED "PURE SILVER"; PRISTINE; 35 OUNCES We are exceptionally pleased to offer this museum quality Meiji sterling silver iris tea service. One of the most imaginatively decorated Japanese sets we have ever owned. From our personal collection of over thirty years. Now offered on Ebay. Meiji silver is, without question, the finest the world has ever known. Many of the silversmiths were trained Samurai. They brought centuries of sword making skill to the graceful hollowares they produced. Our iris tea set perfectly illustrates this Meiji silver artistry. Each piece meticulously hand crafted in raised circular form. Lavishly carved iris along gentle stream, with foot bridge. Elsewere, majestic stands of tall iris amidst thatched fence and garden gates. The designs are quite rare. Other iris sets we have owned or observed depicted the iris in the same manner. Simply set along a small body of water. Here, the silversmith added the bridge, gate and thatched garden fence. Creating an even more compelling, naturalistic design. What's more, each piece displays subtle design differences from the others. The configuration of the flowers, or the structure of the bridge. And, of course, one side of each piece with stream, the other the garden setting. Beautifully cast flower and branch form handles. The teapot with classic overhead swing handle. Tapering to raised iris petal terminals. The handle well hinged, remains in the upright position when desired. Perfectly fit recessed, gently domed covers. Topped with artistically detailed blooming iris and stem finials. The stem integrated beautifully into the carved iris display below. As if actually rising from the cover's florals. Finest hand hammered background. The seemingly endless subtle surface variation capture the natural light brilliantly. Period presentation engraving "From TWL Dec 1904" on smaller pieces. Teapot with "TWL Japan To His Mother 1904". The letters are quite small, and given the heavy guage of the sterling can be removed if desired. This Meiji silver iris and water cream pitcher is 5 1/4 inches handle to spout 3 1/2 tall, weighs 9 ounces. The covered sugar is 6 inches handle to handle and 4 1/4 tall weighs 11 ounces. The teapot is 8 inches tall and it is 6 1/4 spout to end, weighs 15 1/2 ounces. Exceptionally thick, heavy guage sterling construction, the set weighs 35 ounces. Each piece with crisp, well struck hallmarks, "Pure Silver" in Japanese characters. Much higher standard of purity than English sterling. Excellent condition. Near pristine. The set appears little, if ever used. The teapot handle secure. Interior of teapot completely free of discoloration. Each piece stands firm on table or serving tray. Covers close flush to base. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. The beautifully carved iris, garden and gentle stream decoration retains its original crisp, vibrant hand chased detail throughout. Hand carved finials in fine state. For the discerning collector of the finest Meiji silver. A museum worthy, Meiji hand wrought silver iris along garden gate and gentle stream tea service. Signed "Pure Silver". In superb condition. Please feel free to inquire directly about this, or any item we've listed. Whether the item is alone or part of a set. We very much welcome your interest. In such cases we refund your shipping costs as well. Like you, we are only human, and make mistakes. Hopefully, not too many. Remember, the items you see are antiques. Hence, have an expected amount of wear from normal use. As such, returning an item because we failed to mention the tiniest bit of wear, or barely discernible flaw is not acceptable. Nor do we accept returns based on buyer's remorse. Nor change of taste, or because a buyer did not realize how "small" four inches might be once in hand. Please note Massachusetts residents are subject to sales tax. We have over 4285 feedbacks. And, we are quite proud of our 99.9% rating. We received favorable notice in the March 12th, 2006 New York Times. Page 8, Business Section, in a well written article on silver collecting. Copy furnished upon request. From our personal collection, a fine mid 19th century coin silver basket by Edward & John Moore, of Tiffany fame. Illustrated in the cover article in May/June 2008 Silver Magazine. Enjoy....and good fortune in your bidding.
