It has provenance from the 1600's up to 1948. In 1662 it was cast to commemorate an event that happened in Chiba Province. The story starts in a Buddhist temple high in the mountains of Chiba Province. It hung there until 1948 when the gong was given to the U.S. Military Governor of Chiba Province. The Military Governor was in charge of Chiba's reconstruction and legal matters. He was considered the SHOGUN of Chiba at this time. When his tour of duty ended he returned to the United States with this gong given to him by the High Priest of this Temple. The bronze gong accompanied him to Florida where he retired from the military. He passed away in 1985. He is buried in a military cemetary in North Florida. The gong, cast in bronze is dated & signed by the maker, YAMATO NO KAMI TANAKA. There is also some writing in kanji describing the Temple where it was hanging. Weight:  70 lbs     Size:  23" x  26".
