H. Colton and Company   For your consideration I am offering an Extremely Rare 1861 “Johnson’s New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World With Descriptions, Geographical, Statistical and Historical”. This Atlas was Steel Plate printed, the size is 14 ½” x 18 ¼”.  This Atlas was produced under the Supervision of J. H. Colton and A. J. Johnson as the first Atlas produced by the formerly “(Successors to J. H. Colton and Company)”. I have not seen one of these 1861 Johnson’s for sale in years and for many years that are in this beautiful condition. I had five of these Johnson’s Family Atlases in different years and unfortunately this is my last one!   Title Page States- Johnson's New Illustrated (Steel Plate) Family Atlas With Descriptions, Geographical, Statistical, and Historical.   Compiled, Drawn, and Engraved Under The Supervision Of J.H. Colton And A.J. Johnson   NEW YORK   Johnson And Browning, Formerly (Successors To J.H. Colton And Company)   NO. 133 NASSAU STREET 1861.     I conservatively rate this atlas as a “B+” using Old World Auction’s rating system.  The coloring and detail is exceptionally sharp and vivid, the page edges are crisp, there is some ends soiling, foxing on some pages, there are a couple of slight edge tears at the bottom of a couple of pages but none on the maps themselves and a couple of loose seams but nothing major.   Hardbound in quarter leather and green cloth with Gold Gilt Titles on cover and spine- spine is black in color and considering the age in excellent condition. There is some splotching and light foxing on the pages. The front and back covers are in excellent condition and the gold filigree is excellent. The coloring is much more vivid and beautiful in person as the pic lighting tends to wash it out.   Below are my notes: ¨     A few pages semi loose from the binding ¨     Corners are crisp and only a very few slight edge tears ¨     Some slight foxing ¨     Colors are vibrant throughout (although in some pic’s they look washed out they are not in person ¨     A few archival tape repairs ¨     Lettering is detailed and complete ¨     Pages are more crème colored in person and edges show some soiling ¨     Binding covers and spline are in excellent condition especially considering the age   I have tried to include many pictures.
