Description
Thank you very much for considering this beautiful work of art. We are now retired and must part with a collection of over 100 ivory carvings we have loved and taken care of for nearly 40 years. We are very proud to offer only the very FINEST in QUALITY ivory carvings. This carving is 100% genuine ELEPHANT IVORY and in EXCELLENT CONDITION. It was HAND CARVED and HAND SCRIMSHAWED in China by a gifted master craftsman in the early 1900s. It has a lovely patina that nature has chosen to bestow upon it. This carving is UNIQUE and exhibits beautiful IVORY GRAIN which is guaranteed to be clearly visible. The ivory has been highly polished and exquisitely detailed. The quality of the ivory, the quality of the carving and the quality of the scrimshaw work are all exceptional. This carving was legally imported into the USA. This carving can only be shipped to locations within the USA. In January of 2006 Columbus (the experts in Asian art) provided an auction estimate on this piece of $9,000. Auction estimates are conservative and typically well below appraised values. VASE with EMPEROR and FOO DOGS This is a very unique ivory carving of a hexagonal ivory vase and cover with an Emperor seated within the pagoda top. The writing on the columns references the authority of the Emperor This marvelous piece has 2 large foo dog handles. The Foo Dog is the symbol of good fortune, luck and wisdom and is placed at the entrance of a home, temple, palace or other building to guard the occupants from evil and harmful spirits. The Foo Dog is the emblem of valor and energy – the indispensable compliments of wisdom. This massive piece also has 4 dragons that adorn the top of the pagoda. The dragon is the symbol of luck, wealth, good fortune and wisdom. The dragon represents male vigor and fertility and is also the imperial emblem of the Emperor. The coat of arms of the Emperors from the Han period displayed two dragons contesting the fiery pearl. A five-clawed dragon was for imperial use only. A four-clawed dragon indicated a prince and a three-clawed dragon represented an official. The dragon and phoenix are the symbols for husband and wife and emperor and empress. The dragon ranks first amongst the 4 supernatural creatures. This carving is replete with detail - just look at all of the delicate carving that encompasses this gorgeous piece. There is the delicate lattice work that completely encompasses the upper part of the pagoda top and surrounds the seated Emperor. There is also an intricate fence which complete encompasses the Emperor near the base of the pagoda top. There are 2 carved panels opposite the foo dog handles and 4 carved panels near the bottom of the base. There are then 2 large carved panels that adorn the base – replete with people, birds and other carvings. Finally there are many finely carved scroll designs throughout the entire piece. This is a huge piece of art that is 2 ½ feet tall and weighs 10 ½ pounds! This would make an incredible and very rare addition to your collection of fine Asian art and should only increase in value in time.
