This carving is 100% genuine ELEPHANT IVORY and in EXCELLENT CONDITION.  It was HAND CARVED and HAND SCRIMSHAWED and SIGNED in Japan by a gifted master craftsman in the late 1800s.  It has a lovely patina that nature has chosen to bestow upon it. This okimono is UNIQUE and exhibits beautiful IVORY GRAIN which is guaranteed to be clearly visible.  The ivory has been highly polished and exquisitely detailed.  The quality of the ivory, the quality of the carving and the quality of the scrimshaw work are all exceptional. This carving was legally imported into the USA. This carving can only be shipped to locations within the USA. In January of 2006 Columbus (the experts in Asian art) provided an auction estimate on this piece of $12,000.  Auction estimates are conservative and typically well below appraised values.   The Juggler and Son This is a very rare high quality Japanese ivory okimono depicting a father involved in a balancing act while his young son looks on in amazement.  The father has a tanto tucked in his belt, holds a ball in his right hand while balancing a series of objects with his left hand.  A drum rests at his feet.  His son is kneeling at his feet and has a pair of drumsticks in front of him.  The son's hands are both raised in amazement as he watches his father perform this remarkable juggling feat. This wonderful piece was carved during the Meiji Period (1868 - 1912). The details on this carving are remarkable.  The facial features of both the father and son are perfectly in tune with the theme of this piece and embody the characteristics that such a work of art should portray.  The hands are well detailed down to the fingernails and the father's face even reflects a furrow in his brow.  Their robes are beautifully scrimshawed and are carved in great detail.  Each of the objects are a work of art and truly realistic.  The rarity of this marvelous carving adds to its overall mystique and desirability.  The amazing details indicate this is the work of a true master carver.  This is a piece of Japanese art that you will never again see offered for sale and the quality is at the pinnacle of Japanese ivory carvings.  It is signed by the noted artist Shocho in red laquer on the underside of the base.
