Description
NEW LAUNCHING IOD CLASS ONE DESIGN RACER One of the prettiest sailboat designs ever at a ridiculously low Introductory Price!       Completely Finished & Accurately Rigged We proudly introduce a new level of perfection in our fleet of classic sail and power boat models.     Presented is our model of the well loved and respected International One Design Class of racing sailboats as conceived by the illustrious sailing luminary, Cornelius Shields in 1935. His idea was to create a boat that would reduce the costs of racing, and make for a level playing field for the Amorita Cup series, a competition between the Island of Bermuda sailors and those of Long Island Sound.   Bjarne Aas of Frederikstad, Norway was chosen to design and build a smaller version of the Six Metre SAGA. He delivered his first run of 25 wood hulled vessels to City Island, NY at the end of 1936. They were 33' 5" LOA, and 21" 5" on the waterline carrying 466 square feet of sail, and were an immediate success. Fleets grew quickly on Long Island Sound, Bermuda and elsewhere.   TWO VERISONS OF THIS MODEL ~ 4 COLORS: In 1960, the Rules Committee allowed for hulls to be made from fiberglass, and today the new boats compete along with the old ones. Consequently, we are offering two versions of IOD model. The ones with the white sails, which represents Dacron, and no toe rails along the edge of the deck are examples of the fiberglass hulls. The ones with cream sails which represent light weight Prima canvas, with the rails along the gunwale, replicate the wood hull versions. Since each comes in two hull colors, there are four options to choose from.   Pre 1960 model: Dark blue hull and cream sails, or Varnished hull and cream sails. Post 1960 model: Maroon Hull and white sails, or White hull and white sails.                       Four colors from which to choose MODEL'S CONSTRUCTION: They are built the old fashioned way, one plank at a time, and finished in the typical colors of the boats still in use on Long Island Sound. Every feature of the real boats are exactly reproduced,, and the result is a model of unsurpassed beauty and quality. You will find the tiniest detail of all the things that make up a yacht of this outstanding quality are featured in these models.   These include: Hand planked hull over frames Finished in seven coats of hand rubbed enamel Varnished brightwork. Numerous cleats, blocks, and turnbuckles Stitched sail panels Varnished wood floor boards and thwarts Stitched sails pre-hanked to spar Class symbol on both sides of mainsail Accurate standing and running rigging All sorts of deck hardware and fittings. Moveable tiller and rudder Adjustable boom vang Interior ribs And more  MINOR ASSEMBLY REQUIRED: To save cost, this model is shipped with its mast down. All rigging and the sails are pre-attached simplifying the rigging process. For most people, it is a simple affair to step the mast and attach the stays and shrouds. They are pre-measured and hook in place. Detailed instructions are furnished, but if in the rare instance you have a problem, email or call us for guidance.    The IOD Class features a beautifully shaped hull with classic long overhangs, bow and stern in glistening in enamel, with varnished trim, decks and cabin houses. They are Marconi rigged with jib and main. The running rigging, including carefully stitched sails is authentic to the last detail. Inspired by the beauty of the Six Metre yacht, Saga, and its performance, Shields' aim was to use it as the basis of a one design racing class that would have the advantages of both limiting the upwardly-spiraling costs of yacht racing, and putting competing crews on an equal footing as far as equipment was concerned.   Shields commissioned Bjarne Aas of Frederikstad, Norway, to design a boat that was a smaller version of Saga which he also designed and built. This resulted in a 33 foot racer with less displacement, but greater beam of 6 ft 9 in. It measured 21 ft 5 in at the waterline, and had a draft of 5 ft 4 in and displaced 7,120 lb.  The mast was 45 ft  and carries 426 square feet of sail. The result is a beautiful reminder of yachting's "golden age" with the traditional metre-boat's long overhangs, graceful sheer, deep, narrow hull and lofty rig.   The cost of an IOD in 1936 was $2,670. Everything required including shipping charges from Norway were included in the price. With the backing of the enthusiastic Shields, the boat was quickly adopted by the top racers on Long Island Sound. The first of the initial order of 25 yachts was delivered at City Island, New York in December 1936.   The Internationals quickly spread. Bermuda took delivery of seven in January 1937. The next year fleets were established in Marblehead and Northeast Harbor, Maine, followed by fleets in Norway and Cowes. After the liberation of Norway, construction resumed at Frederikstad with boats going to San Francisco, Sweden, France, Oyster Bay, and Cowes. Fiberglass construction was introduced in the 1960s with great care taken by the class to ensure that the wood and glass yachts could race on an equal basis.   Today, there are ten fleets racing around the world -- Bermuda, Norway (Oslo), the United Kingdom (Falmouth), Sweden (Stenegsund), New York (two feets -- Larchmont and Fishers Island), Maine (Northeast Harbor), Massachusetts (two fleets -- Marblehead and Nantucket) and California (San Francisco Bay).   Today IODs are actively raced in ten local fleets in America and Europe. Representatives of those fleets annually compete in a World Championship (the venue of which rotates between the fleets), a North American Championship, Bermuda Race Week, the Nantucket Invitational, a European Championship and occasional Team-racing championships hosted by individual fleets. Yachts from the International One Design class are used for the annual Bermuda Gold Cup as part of the professional World Match Racing Circuit.   Most recently, IODs were the first class awarded International Classic Yacht status by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF).
