Description
This is an original, handwritten journal written by a passenger on the steamer Hermann. This traveller began his journey in 1858 in the City of Hamilton, Canada. He travelled to New York where he boarded the steamship Hermann bound for San Francisco, California by way of the Strait of Magellan. It is a fascinating account. He describes the scenery along the way, including volcanoes, the weather, storms at sea, the sea life, flying fish and porpoises, the experiences on board the ship, his observations about the native people and customs in foreign ports where they called for coal along the route, and the emotions experienced and observed in others. The journal ends after he travels up the muddy Sacramento river, takes a stage to Stockton and ends at the southern mines. In the gold fields beyond Stockton where, after unsuccessfully prospecting for gold, he leaves with a heavy heart, finding it more difficult than expected and with no gold found. The journal has one detached board left. Some of the pages are still loosely attached to each other, others are loose. The paper is old and fragile and should be handled with great care. There is chipping around the edges with small pieces missing. Please see photos and ask any questions before purchase. The pages measure about 6 x 12. There are 26 pages of handwriting. These are numbered at the top in pencil. There are also 4, mostly blank pages with a few notations on them. This includes some names but I cannot say if any are the name of the passenger that wrote this journal. There are many wonderful websites that have information on this particular steamer with pictures. I also found information on this very voyage. The website gives a factual historical account. This journal gives the personal human side. An example is when the writer describes when Captain Cavendy is called to business in New York mid journey, (I don't believe the passengers knew of the financial crisis that was at hand) it was as if an old friend was leaving..when he shoved off he was soluted with cheers by all on board...tears ran down his weather beaten cheeks. The author had very nice penmanship but it does take some time to read as he wrote a lot on every page. If you are seriously considering purchasing this wonderful piece of history and are curious about any of the details that may be in the journal, please email. I have read the entire journal and taken notes and written down dates and locations and would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
