galerielithique store LARGE FLINT PROTO HANDAXE Typology : Large example of a rare proto-handaxe, with  long point. Cutting : This unusual piece was made using a flint pebble. One face was fully cut ; the other side is cut on the left, and the natural shape was kept on the right. A long strong point was created and retouched, and the butt was cut also (unfortunately a modern blow took away some of the patina but doesn't affect the shape.This primitive handaxe shows evidence of useware. Incredible piece, unusual shape ! Dating, hominid : This implement belongs to the early Acheulian Culture (Lower Paleolithic period, circa 500 000 years ago), and was conceived by Homo HEIDELBERGENSIS. Origin : It was found in the Grand-Pressigny area, discovered in the Creuse's ancient riverbed, where the flint was polished in the turmoils of the sands and waters. Sizes :  13 cm X 18 cm Weight :  1500g A beautiful patina embellishes this tool from the acheulian Culture. Well preserved, modern damage on the butt (see photo).
