Description
Designed by Hans Wegner in 1949, this chair was originally manufactured by Johannes Hansen of Copenhagen. Knoll has produced this design under license, as well. Originally with a cane wrapping on the back(#501) to conceal the joints, the chair was later made without the cane wrapping(#503). Although the design is officially catalogued as the no. 501 by its manufacturer, it has become widely known as "the chair", as in THE chair, by its fans. This offering is for two #503 oak framed chairs.Since teakwood was the "flavor of the day" in the 1950's, few oak versions were produced. The two chairs started out as natural oak put somewhere in their lives were painted and the original wool upholstery not removed, but just covered over.I think this may have occurred in the 1960's where the modern look became more of the Italian design movement which preferred bright colors rather than natural woods. The chairs have been returned to their original look but do have some grain traces of its many years as a painted #503.It does not deter from the elegance of the oak's rich graining(see detail photos). When the reupholsted cover was removed, it revealed the original protected wool coverings in excellent condition(see photo). In 1993 the chairs were put back into production rangeing in price from $3800 to $5000 each. The measurements: 20.5" deep x 25' wide x 30" high with a seat height of 17.5".Please remember you are bidding on a PAIR of #503 chairs.Shipping for each chair is $99.00.
