BUILDER'S STYLE HALF HULL OF EXTREME CLIPPER SHIP ARGONAUT, BUILT 1876 Presented is a magnificent builder's style half hull model of the ARGONAUT formerly ELVIRA and ARGO built by Barclay Curle, Glasgow in 1876 for J.Carmichael & Co.She was a three masted, full rigged ship and was used in the wool trade, 1488 tons, length 254.4ft x beam 38.6ft x depth 23.2ft and iron construction. Her best run from Sydney to London was in 77 days in 1895. Llater became the Portuguese ELVIRA and was used on the Lisbon - Rio de Janeiro - New Orleans - Lisbon service. In 1913 she was renamed ARGO. The half hull is constructed of seven lifts of which two are under the hull's blue paint. The wood used is distressed and has some small worm holes which adds to the appearance of age. It is painted an antique green. Each is of a historic ship that opened the trade routes between Asia, England and the United States. They are ARGONAUT, LIGHTNING and THERMOPYLAE. A period plate identifies each ship, it designer, builder, year of construction, measurements, and significant passages. Of the following half hulls, LIGHTENING, ARGONAUT and THERMOPYLAE are available for sale. From the top, ARGONAUT, THERMOPYLAE, & LIGHTNING DIMENSIONS:The ship model is 31 1/2" L x 3" W x 4 1/2" Depth The backboard is 36 3/4" L x 9 3/4" W x 1/2" TWeight 10 pounds. CONSTRUCTION & CONDITION: Made of seven lifts of wood, two of which are hidden by paint. Worm holes in wood. Hand finished. Backboard appears to be Pine finished as Mahogany.
