Description
Title: Giraffe Type of Object: Carved giraffeEthnic Group: ShonaCountry of Origin: ZimbabweMaterials: WoodApproximate Age: ContemporaryDimensions: 54 inchesOverall Condition: Excellent Damage, Repair: Museum quality restoration at horns, crack in base Additional Information: Mukwa or Mukungu wood. I spent many hours in South Africa a few years ago, looked at hundreds of giraffes, and carefully chose the best. Zimbabwe's horrific social and economic wores have reduced tourism to a trickle, and so many sculptors are making their way with their giraffes to South Africa. I can only get them when they're being sent home in a container--otherwise air shipping is prohibitive. Zimbabwe giraffes are, in my opinion, vastly superior to those being carved in Kenya. Zimbabwe is home to Shona sculptors, and the best of the giraffes, carved by both Shona and Ndebele, are by turns regal, humerous, and majestic. Each has a different expression. You have probably been reading about Zimbabwe's agony. More than half of the population will starve without international aid, and the carvers are no exception.**040926** All content, including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc., 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers!
