Description
1968 Gibson RB100, modified in Nashville back in 73 by studio pro Dave Garrett for the person I bought it from in 78. Has 2 Keith Scruggs tuners and had a tone ring set in replacing the standard brass tube, giving it closer to the desired 'Mastertone " sound. Has railroad spikes at frets 7 and 9. The tailpiece is adjustable so you can go from a flat top sound to a more 'archtoppy ' tonal quality. The tonering I was told was supposed to be out of an older Gibson that was in a wreck ( I was told they paid a lot, like $500 for the tone ring) however the specs on the tone ring are more like a Fender tone ring. Most people in the know don't believe it to be Gibson. Tone ring specs are 38.1 ounce weight, 11" across, just short of 1' tall, like 15/16's. The outer wall is 1/8 thick, the inner v is partially unfinished on the beveled side. It has 20 holes around it. The banjo has a nice sound. Tony Trishka tried it at a music workshop of his I attended and thought it a nice playing instrument. The banjo shows some wear, there is some cracking across the laquer finish and cracking through the paint across the top of the head(black paint up at the Gibson logo at top of neck). The chrome around the tone ring is loosing some of its sheen, which makes me think the tonering is older than the rest of the instrument. My first banjo which I bought in 1972 still does not have any gloss reduction like the ring in this RB.There are some wear places on the outer edge of the resonator like wear the strap might attach. All in all was built to be a good players instrument. I just bought a new Remo frosted head for it and it still has the previous 5 Star translucent head and new set of strings. The instrument weighs 9.6 lb, which makes it easier to play when your playing 2 to 3 hours at a time. The lighter weight was another reason I bought it to begin with. Something else I found out was that when I would take it around to openmikes, jam sessions, parties, gigs etc there would be a lot of people cooing like zombies over the instrument,"Gibson, ah, Gibson banjo". There is a lot of name brand recognition with Gibson banjos that gains an instant approval of the masses I found. This is something anyone considering playing professionally or semiprofesionally should want to consider. The instrument is currently disassembled for tone ring inspection. I can reassemble it for purchaser or leave it disassembled. I bought this for $900 back in 78. Running that amount through the Government's inflation tracker works out at around $3400 in todays money. Was asking $1250, reduced to $1150 for quick sale. Email questions or call 360-671-2434. Shipping within US about $60. Shipping weight about 20 lbs. Will ship overseas at additional cost. Paypal, checks, MO's ok but will delay shipping till bank says ok.
