It is also marked on the handle catch on the top. The makers mark is M&Co for Marples & Company Ltd, an excellent firm of makers. The piece consists of the base dish which is 1.5 inches deep with a length of 11.1 inches and width of 8.6 inches. Into this fits the lid of depth 1.3 inches x 9.7 x 7.2 inches. The handle clips into the lid in the usual manner or the lid can used on its own as a dish. The weight of this fine entree dish is 48.25 oz.(1370 grams). The total height is about 4.9 inches. There is a fine crest on the side of the lid of an antlered deer's head with motto under of 'Spero Meliora' (I Hope for Better Things), a crest and motto shared by quite a number of families.
