Description
A gorgeous antique gold thimble, made about 1860 by the Dutch silversmith Cornelis B.H. Canté. The thimble has a marvelous border above a pearl rim. It has diagonal waffle knurling and a special top with spiralling knurling. The thimble has been tested 14 carat gold. It has the Dutch hallmark for small items made of gold, 1814-1905, a lion head, facing left. The thimble is 7/8" high, 5/8" wide; the weight is 4.1 gram. The condition is excellent, without dents, holes or repairs and it is round. Cornelis B.H. Canté was born 1810, he died 1877. Canté worked in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 1837-1870. From 1837-52 he worked with his brother-in-law; he worked alone from 1852. His hallmark of the second period, "C52" , is stamped at the inside of this thimble. Another thimble made by Canté is depicted in the book by Kay Sullivan, Needlework Tools and Accessories, page 68, Plate 61. * * * * * From now on I am listing my antique, pre-1930, sewing items in the Ebay category, Antiques > Sewing (Pre-1930).
