Description
Up for auction is presented a good 19c English mother of pearl & abalone needle box or case. This needle box was most likely produced in a English workshop around c1870 for the Victorian lady. This is a magnificent storage box for needles in the stlye and shape of the early knife boxes. The main carcass of the box is made from sandalwood or a similar wood then veneered over with nicely colored mother of pearl cut shapes along with abalone edgings to the top of the lid. The inside lippings to the top and bottom sections are of a natural off white tusk as are the divisions in the bottom section. The hinge and push button release are of silver and are in fine working order with the interior walls being of a velvet type material. The box is in excellent condition having only a small nibble in the top rear corner of the lid and one other on the very bottom below on the same corner. Height 2" x Width 1/2" x Depth 1-1/2". A fabulous sewing item that deserves a place in any serious collection . You won't be disapointed.
