Description
Excellent Handaxe, Paleolithic, Lower Acheulian DescriptionType: cordiforme handaxe on large flake Paleolithic Period, Industry: Lower Paleolithic, Lower Acheulian Dating: in Europe still dated ca. 800 to 400 ka. But very recent archaeological research in Western Europe proved that the European continent has been conquested as early as 1,2 to 1,1 Myr. – Early Pleistocene (on request more information will be given to our customers Description: Size: length 13,9 cm, width 9,7 cm, thickness 4,3 cm, weight 0,690 kg Shape, Retouch: this outstanding handaxe was deliberately made on flake to make a thin specimen and, more important, to obtain thin and straight edges. The axis of the blank is slightly oblique relative to the axis of the ready made tool (see point of percussion which is marked). The interior side of the blank presents facial flaking at the right part of the side and fine lateral flaking at the left edge. The other side (exterior side of the blank) is almost entirely cortical. Only the distal part of the left edge presents a well made regular lateral retouch to thin the distal part of this edge and to create a thin pointed tip. Raw-material: a flake out of gray-green quartzite, the most common and typical raw-material at all sites on the Garonne terraces Preservation: very well. The surface is somewhat weathered, but flake scars are well defined, the edges are still quite sharp. No modern damages as far as can be seen Additional Information, Literature: the pebble tools found on the high gravel terraces of the Garonne, Tarn and Aveyron river are among the earliest tools found in Europe. Lit: A. Tavoso, Le Paléolithique supérieur et moyen du Haut-Languedoc, Paris 1978Origin, Site: high gravel terrace of the Garonne, south of Toulouse, southern France We have been listing more interesting paleolithic artifacts, please have a look!
