Description
Exc XL Waisted FIRST PERIOD CLOCK by ROISON Paris c1760 This splendid Boulle Clock is made in France around 1760, say the third quarter of the 18th century. It has verge escapement and double signature. The imposing waisted wooden case has the rare brown/black fine pallissander veneer, excellent done. All around rich ornamented with gilt bronze parts, as on the detachable hood the gilt cherub trumpeteer with crown rim and weapon with tafts, the corners, the scrolls and leaves ornaments, as well as the feet. Above the door a face. Hinging front door with wide gilt bronze ornamented rim, large scrolls and leaves ornament, glass window and key-lock. Wooden back door with slide lock, inside also with the finest wood veneer as well as the base. The short sides with glass windows, set in gilt bronze rims. All over in perfect condition. It comes with the original wall support in the same style and with front marquetry, perfect condition. Gilt bronze dial with a double row of white porcelain numeral cartouches with Roman hours and Arabic minutes numerals and fine stylized steel hands. The center with a porcelain cartouche with signature : “Roisin à Paris”. All in perfect condition. Early French clockwork with pendulum with brass bob, verge escapement, near 8 days going work and the 1/1 and ½ hours striking on a cast bell on top below the hood. The large stars-hours wheel has engraved hours numerals. Good running and striking condition. On the back platine the engraved signature : “Jn.Bte Roisin Paris” (Jean Baptiste Roisin had his studio in Paris around 1740, and became sworn by the king in 1753). Measurements : width at front feet 14.5”, depth 7”, high 33” (till trumpet), dial diam. near 8.25”, support 14.5” x 8”, total height of clock+support 44”.
