Ethiopian Manuscript. A Semi Large Size Nineteenth Century Ethiopian BIBLE, on Vellum, with 139 leaves (278 pages). The Bible is hand written in black ink, with headings, keywords, and markings in red, on vellum, with wooden covers, in the traditional Ethiopian fashion. It is written in Ge`ez script, the liturgical language of Ethiopia, 24 – 25 per page. The manuscript is hand sewn as usual, just less than 5 inches in width, over 7 inches in height, and a little over 2 inches in thickness. It has 8 very beautiful and elaborate full-page illustrations in colors. Also it has 6 decorative headpieces in color with typical Ethiopian decorations. Bible begins on folio 4a. Original sewn wooden covers in the traditional Ethiopian fashion, with the wooden covers overlaid with brown morocco, which is elaborately tooled in crosses and other decorations; it is in excellent condition. The Bible is divided into the following sections: #1. Folios 4a-106a: Psalms of David. #2. Folios 106b-117a: Biblical Canticles. #3. Folios 117b-123a: Song of Songs. #4. Folios 123b-133a: Praises of Mary [Wəddase Maryam]. Arranged for the days of the week (Monday, folio: 123b; Tuesday, folio 124a; Wednesday, folio 126a; Thursday, folio 127b; Friday, folio 129b; Saturday, folio 131a; Sunday, folio 132a). #5. Folios 133a-138b: Gate of Light [Anqäêä Bərhan], which is incomplete. The 8 miniatures paintings are as follows: #1. Folio 3a: David playing the harp. #2. Folio 20a: Madonna and Child. #3. Folio 52a: The Crucifixion. #4. Folio 76a: Jesus Carrying the Cross. #5. Folio 95a: The Last Supper. #6. Folio 112a: Saint George and the Dragon. #7. Folio 137a: Jesus Raises Adam and Eve. #8. Folio 139a: The Ascension. Folio 2b contains a list of the Ge‘ez alphabet and numbers in black ink. Folios 2b and 3a contain a list of the Ge‘ez alphabet and numbers in pencil The decorative headpieces are on the following pages: 1a, 38a, 72a, 106b, 117b, and 123b. (haräg using black, red, yellow and green); many folios employ line of alternating red and black dots as section divider. Rubrication for “God” in the biblical materials; and “Mary” in the final two works. Columetric layout of text: folio 114 (tenth biblical canticle). Folios 97b – 98a (Ps. 135) has rubrication in last word on right margin.
