Description
IMPORTANT GEORGE III ENGLISH STERLING SILVER "MONTIETH" PUNCH BOWL; ELEGANT WAVE AND NOTCHED PIERCED RIM; FLEUR DE LIS; LEAF AND VINE CASCADING DISPLAYS; PARTIAL FLUTED; THOMAS WALLIS II, LONDON, 1808; NEVER MONOGRAMMED; EXCELLENT CONDITION; 39 OUNCES We are extremely pleased to offer this is museum worthy English George III sterling silver "Montieth" form punch bowl. The earliest and most eagerly sought of all punch bowl designs. From the highly regarded London firm of Thomas Wallis II. Date marked 1808. Wallis apprenticed under his Uncle Thomas I in 1771, as a goldsmith. Listed from 1778 through 1792 as a buckle maker. Sixth mark as a large worker in 1792. In 1810 partnership with Jonathan Hayne. Retired in 1821. Examples from his firm grace major collections worldwide. Most of these, however, his work as a small worker. The famed Clark Art Institute, the largest collection of English silver outside the U.K., displays several caddy spoons from Wallis. The important Wallis 1808 sterling Montieth is from our personal collection of thirty years. Now offered on Ebay. Punch bowls first appear in England c1685. The Montieth was the earliest recorded design (See Waldron page 18). So called given its notched upper rim. The notches were used to hang the foot of wine glasses. Allowing them to cool inside the bowl. The earliest Montieths had detachable rims. A near identical c1720 example is illustrated in Waldron, page 19. This superb, Thomas Wallis Montieth in classic raised circular design. Gently tapering to base. Meticulosuly crafted raised, alternating wave and notched rim. Unique, satin chased "shadow" border, just below. Accentuates the visual presence of the Montieth rim perfectly. Pierced triangle supporting fluer-de-lis to centre. Below, richly carved leaf and vine displays cascading downward. Lower body with elegant petal fluted decoration. The "petals" in varying lengths, in a wide "scallop" formation. The leaf and vine descending downward. Nearly touching each of the longest (centre) panels. With this configuration of the fluting and leaf and florals, Wallis provides even more visual appeal to his already dramatic design. The punch bowl supported upon thick, well formed step and domed base. Never monogrammed. This Montieth punch bowl is 10 inches in diameter and 6 3/4 inches tall. Exceptionally thick, heavy guage sterling construction, weighs 39 ounces. In excellent condition. Appears little if ever used. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. The bowl is perfectly steady on table or sideboard. The elegant cascading leaf and vine displays and richly chased "shadow" border retain most all of their original crisp, vibrant hand chased detail. Single one inch scratch just above fluted decoration and few shallow pin head size bumps. None at all distracting. Fully hallmarked to shoulder as shown. For the discerning collector of the finest Georgian period sterling. A superb, Thomas Wallis II George III sterling silver Montieth punch bowl. The most coveted of all forms. Never monogrammed. In near pristine condition. Georgian sterling silver punch bowls in any form are rare. Smaller examples command $3-5000. USD or more. Add to this the Montieth design, and prices easily exceed $6-8000. USD. Please feel free to inquire directly about this, or any item we've listed. Whether the item is alone or part of a set.
