Description
From a local estate is this very nice Swedish silver ladle from the early 19th century with a maker’s mark of "S Floberg". This ladle is 7 1/8" long and has a doublestruck (both sides of handle) oval-shaped threaded handle. The bowl is elongated to one side and more narrow on that side presumably so that the contents can be poured from that side. It has a very interesting monogram (possibly CL) which was punched (similar to a die-cut hallmark punch) in a circular cartouche on the handle reverse, and traces of the outline of the punch are visible on the front of the handle. In addition to the maker’s mark, it is also marked X2, three crowns in a trefoil design (denoting the silver standard, which I believe is 813) and another mark (probably bust of St. Erik, the patron saint of Stockholm - upside down from the other marks). My understanding is that the X2 represents the date 1804 (checking Tardy’s book) and that the bust indicates a Stockholm origin, but I am not an expert on Swedish marks. I have provided a photo of the marks for your reference. Condition is very good, just needing a good polishing. I only see one tiny ding on the front of the handle (opposite the monogram).
