Description
A Particular Poet DESCRIPTION: PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO READ COMPLETE DESCRIPTION * Du BARRY, Countess Jeanne [1743 – 1793, guillotine execution, French] The infamous Royal Mistress to King Louis XV - POWER OF ATTORNEY Manuscript document from her estate - September 22, 1795 - Signed by the Marquis Nicholas Du Barry - Two manuscript Folio sheets, one originally serving as an inner envelope with a later brief manuscript description and date in English. - Text in French. In short, in 1½ pages, recto and verso, this French Revolution era document directs the Lord Chancellor of London to pay over to the Count of Juillac (nephew of Nicholas Du Barry) 10,000 French Livres owed Nicholas from the estate of his “defunct sister-in-law” Jeanne, Countess Du Barry. Signed by the Marquis du Barry-Conti with the Du Barry seal affixed near his signature and date. - The lower half of the main page verso is a ½ page attestation by one Fred. Louis Klapp, in a second hand, also in French, with his signature and the red seal of the Principality of Waldstein affixed. - The power of attorney is transcribed in a lighter shade of brown ink than is the attestation, but both sections of the document are of elegant hand and are fully legible. - The document is transcribed on heavy, magnificently watermarked paper of high rag content and is completely legible with wax seals amazingly intact. The larger of the two seals, while seemingly stable, shows hairline fractures under close scrutiny. The two Folio sheets (approx 13” x 8.5” each) have been professionally bound together with archival tape and the vertical edge nearest the seals has been professionally reinforced with translucent archival tape, as well. - High resolution digital images of the complete text are readily available upon request. We have yet to secure a full, literal translation in English, though this historically interesting document certainly does beg for one. - A genuine document of historical significance relating to an important Royal figure during the French Revolution, tried for crimes against France and executed by guillotine, rumored to have gone to her death crying out that she was indeed too beautiful to lose her head. The Countess duBarry had been accused of stashing away (in England) jewels and cash assets, determined, at trial, to be the property of France. Perhaps this document supports the truth of those accusations. - It is undoubtedly true that any account of this enterprising and colorful young woman has been tainted, to some degree, by the teller’s own political bent, his emotional reaction to his interpretation of her role in the government of the King Louis XV and whatever tendency toward embellishment and exaggeration may have been exercised. But whatever the version, it’s certainly a fascinating story with perhaps enough glamour, intrigue and history to inspire the likes of a good Dumas novel. - BUYERS IN ALL COUNTRIES OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES WILL HAVE TO INQUIRE ABOUT SHIPPING COSTS BEFORE ATTEMPTING PURCHASE.
