The spines are wonderfully gilt-stamped with elaborate floral ornaments. Each volume also has two elegant gilt-stamped spine labels stating title and volume number. The covers and edges are also decorated with beautiful and surprisingly detailed gilt-stamped patterns. All volumes have beautiful endpapers made of finely coloured marbled paper. All edges of the text block red. All bindings are in very good condition and only slightly rubbed or bumped. The gilt-stamping on the edges has unfortunately partly rubbed off. The paper is in superb condition and hardly shows any signs of foxing. Two thirds of the volumes have been professionally repaired at the joints preserving their exquisite design and quality. First volume with an engraved exlibris showing a crown and the initials RS with floral decorations. Volume two with a green spine label and small worm holes on front cover. On the whole this is a very well preserved and complete edition of the extremely rare Parisian First Edition of the Encyclopédie. Description, content and further information: The greatest minds of the 18th century worked on the Encyclopédie, among them Montesquieu, Rousseau, Voltaire, Leibnitz, Turgot and Condillac. As one of the greatest undertakings in the history of book printing the Encyclopédie marked a significant change in the way knowledge was dealt with and ordered in the Western hemisphere. It was and in many ways still is one of the "seven pillars of our culture and education" (Panckoucke). All volumes at hand belong to the extremely rare Parisian First Edition. On publication the Encyclopédie was forbidden in all of France. The publishers had to overcome a lot of difficulties in order to get printing permission. As they were prosecuted in Paris, they transported the printing press to Neufchatel where only few copies were finished. The 17 volumes of this edition are therefore almost exclusively found in state or royal libraries. The Encyclopédie quickly became the most important work of its kind, outgrowing even the popular Zedler. For decades it controlled and documented the intellectual progress in Europe and became a brainpool for the ideas of the Enlightenment. Unlike any other work it epitomises the pre-revolutionary Zeitgeist in France. The 178 authors of the Encyclopédie aimed at changing the old power structures and furthering a democratic transformation of society. Especially for the rest of Europe it was a messenger of a new era, of technological advances and like no other promoted the personal freedom of the individual. Jahrhunderts aus edlem Kalbsleder auf sechs echten Bünden. Die Rücken sind mit prachtvollen floralen Goldprägungen ausgestattet. Sie werden von zwei goldgeprägten Rückenschildern verziert, auf welchem Titel und Bandnummer zu lesen sind. Die Deckel und Stehkanten weisen ein ebenfalls goldgeprägtes Liniendekor auf. Die Vorsätze sind mit einem mehrfarbigen Marmorpapier ausgeschlagen. Alle Bände besitzen einen dreiseitigen Rotschnitt. Die Einbände sind bestoßen und an den Rücken und Deckeln stellenweise etwas beschabt. Vor allem an den Kanten ist das Liniendekor daher nur noch selten erhalten. Bei etwa zwei Dritteln der Bände wurden die äußeren Gelenke fachmännisch restauriert. Das Papier ist in sehr gutem Zustand und lediglich ab und zu leicht braunfleckig oder gebräunt. Im ersten Band findet sich ein gestochenes Exlibris, welches die Initialen RS in floraler Optik mit einer Krone geschmückt zeigt. Band 2 trägt statt eines roten, ein grünes Rückenschild. Insgesamt ein gut erhaltenes Exemplar der gesuchten Pariser Erstausgabe des wohl bedeutendsten Lexikons der europäischen Aufklärung. Bezüglich Vollständigkeit und Zustand eine wahre Rarität.
