Description
DENT WHITLOCK EAGLE SKELETON ACORN CLOCK SIMON WILLARD E. DENT AND COMPANY LTD, ARE THE MAKERS OF THE GREAT CLOCK OF WESTMINSTER IN LONDON, KNOWN AS "BIG BEN". THE COMPANY HAS LONG BEEN RECOGNIZED FOR BUILDING THE FINEST AND THE MOST UNUSUAL TIMEPIECES IN THE WORLD. ONE SUCH RARE AND BEAUTIFUL TIMEPIECE IS THE EAGLE SKELETON CLOCK, DESIGNED BY THE REKNOWN CLOCKMAKER F.W. WHITLOCK. THIS SPECIAL INSTRUMENT, BASED ON THE ORIGINAL SIMON WILLARD ACORN CLOCK BUILT IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY, IS TRULY A WORK OF ART. EVERY COMPONENT OF THE SIMON WILLARD SKELETON CLOCK WAS TOTALLY EXPOSED AS PART OF THE DESIGN. A GLASS ENCLOSURE PROTECTED THE MECHANISM. IT WAS WOUND BY MEANS OF AN ENDLESS CHAIN THAT PROTRUDED THROUGH THE FRONT OF THE BASE AND RETRACTED AUTOMATICALLY AT THE COMPLETION OF THE WINDING MOTION. IN THIS MANNER, IT WAS POSSIBLE TO WIND THE CLOCK WITHOUT THE NEED TO REMOVE THE PROTECTIVE GLASS ENCLOSURE. SINCE THE WINDING CHAIN OF THE ORIGINAL DESIGN WAS TERMINATED WITH A SMALL BRASS ACORN, THE SIMON WILLARD CLOCK WAS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE "ACORN" CLOCK. The Eagle Clock made by the E. DENT AND COMPANY LTD has combined the intrigue of an eighteenth century masterpiece with the expertise of the most famous clockmaker in the world, to produce this spectacular timepiece. This clock stands 23-1/2 inches high and 12-1/2 inches wide and 5 inches deep with a black and white striated marble base. It is interesting to note the differing opinions as to the origin of the design. The Dent Company brochure description states that it is based on an original French design of the early nineteenth century, while the almost identical design by Simon Willard was actually built in the United States during the late eighteenth century. The article titled, "Information Please" taken from the March 1981 Watch and Clock Review shows a picture of the original Simon Willard clock.  Most significantly, due to unexpected economic conditions at the time production was to be initiated, only a few of these beautiful clocks were actually produced, so they are rare indeed. Shipping anywhere in the US is free. International shipping at actual cost. Contact the seller for additional information. DENT WHITLOCK EAGLE SKELETON ACORN CLOCK SIMON WILLARD rwaytogo Store
