This fabulous original issue of a scarce 1776 British monthly periodical, with two pages (4 columns) reporting the complete “DECLARATION BY THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GENERAL CONGRESS ASSEMBLED, JULY 4....” (***see photos**.) Detailed coverage of the Revolutionary War in America is reported in each month and includes three foldout maps: 1.) “A MAP OF THE COUNTRY ROUND PHILADELPHIA-INCLUDING PART OF NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, STATEN ISLAND & LONG ISLAND. (10 INCHES BY 8 INCHES.) 2.) “A MAP OF CONNECTICUT AND RHODE ISLAND- WITH LONG ISLAND SOUND, ETC” ( 9 1/2 INCHES BY 8 INCHES.) 3.) “MAP OF THE PROGRESS OF HIS MAJESTY’S ARMIES IN NEW YORK, DURING THE LATE CAMPAIGN ILLUSTRATING THE ACCOUNTS...” (13 inches by 8 inches.) Shows encounters between the two armies, encampments, paths of retreat, etc. The front page nameplate contains a 2 1/2 inch by 2 1/2 inch engraved scene of the St. John’s Gate in London (***see photo**,) and the Table of Contents. The August issue’s front page lists “DECLARATION OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCY (page) 361,” under the date line (**see photo**.) The volume contains 12 plates including three other foldout maps of the South Pole, the Eastern Hemisphere and the Western Hemisphere. (The volume calls for a “Map of the Discoveries of Capt. Cook and a “Map of Long Island,” which are lacking.) An excellent collectible and opportunity to own an original 1776 Declaration of Independence, that was printed the year that the Revolutionary War in America was officially declared. PRINTINGS OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE MADE IN 1776 ARE QUITE RARE. IT IS UNLIKELY THAT YOU WILL FIND ANOTHER IN AS GOOD CONDITION, WITH THE ASSOCIATED MAPS OF THE REVOLUTION. ****PLEASE NOTE CONDITION! The volume is complete (less the maps of Capt. Cook and Long Island) and clean, with minor light foxing on only a few pages. The left border of the map of “HIS MAJESTY’S ARMY IN NEW YORK,” is worn and lightly soiled. Bound in 3/4 leather with raised bands, gold embossed backstrip designs. The front hinge is cracked before the January title page but the binding is otherwise tight and boards attached. Boards have some wear and the usual bumps and scuffs--mostly very good (***see photo**.) 10 day return privilege.
