The Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies was approved with a Resolution of United States Congress of May 19, 1864, and appointed its preparation and collection under the direction of Adjt. General E.D. Townsend, U.S. Army, and was published by the United States Government Printing Office between the years of 1891 and 1895 as a history of the Civil War (or War Between the States) and constitutes 175 plates, of which this map is one, portraying a wealth of information on battle lines, topography, and military strategy. All maps were printed in lithograph color, primarily green, blue, brown, with the Union Army represented in blue, and the Confederate positions in red.
