Description
CHARITY BOOKS PLUS Raising Money for good Causes Throughout the World Of the Imitation of Christ by Thomas A Kempis Published by Kegan Paul, 1898 STUNNING VELLUCENT BINDING by CEDRIC CHIVERS of BATH Hand-painted boards covered in vellem, stamped with gilt and mother-of-pearl laid-in This edition of the "Imitation of Christ" is printed on Arnold and Foster's unbleached handmade paper. The illustrations and title page have been designed by Mr Laurence Housman and engraved upon wood by Miss Clemence Housman The Imitation needs no introduction. For more than five centuries it has been the most popular spiritual book second only to the Sacred Scriptures. It presents the fundamental principles of the spiritual life. The Christian soul is invited to follow Christ Who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. As we study its contents we are convinced that without that Way there is no going, without that Truth there is no knowing, without that Life there is no real living. ABOUT VELLUCENT BINDINGS A method of decorating (and protecting) a bookbinding using transparent vellum. The technique was developed by CEDRIC CHIVERS of Bath sometime around 1895, and was designed not only for the protection of leather bindings, but also to protect covers bearing coloured designs (usually pictorial) hand painted on paper, attached to the boards, and then covered with the vellum. The vellucent covering was suitable for highly decorative designs because of the possibility of further embellishments such as mother-of-pearl, shell, iridescent beetle wings etc, all of which were then covered and permanently protected by the vellum. The surface of the vellum itself could then be tooled in gold, further enhancing the entire effect. CONDITION This binding is in very good condition - no splitting or cracking to the vellum - light signs of age to the covers but nothing worse than expected for a book that is 110 years old - the hinges are secure with no cracking - the handmade marble endpapers are in very good condition - the front endpaper has been cut off at the top (approx 1.5 inches) . . . this is probably where a previous owner's name was written - the contents are all present and in very good condition - no spotting ir marks. A beautifully decorated book. if you would like further detail of condition then please feel free to phone our charity shop in Edinburgh - 0131 332 4911 - we are open 10am - 5pm Tuesday - Saturday.
