Description
IMPORTANT LATE 19TH CENTURY CHINESE EXPORT SILVER MINIATURE TORTURE CHAMBER; FOURTEEN "PAINSTAKINGLY" CARVED FIGURES; ARMED GUARDS SUBJECTING PRISONERS TO VARIOUS GRISLY TORTURES; SEATED MAGISTRATE BEHIND DESK LOOKING ON; ORIGINAL HAND CARVED ROSEWOOD BASE We are exceptionally pleased to offer this "hauntingly" designed and masterfully hand crafted late 19th century Chinese export silver miniature torture chamber. Quite rare. If not one of a kind. Nothing like this is illustrated in Forbes, nor in the famed Chait or Chan collections. We have never encountered this form. Nor any like it. In over thirty years of collecting trade silver. From our personal collection. Now "painfully" offered on Ebay. The macabre scene is comprised of fourteen, life like Chinese figures. Each figure displays rich, masterfully hand craved detail. From the various size wide brimmed hats. Long braided or pinned back bun hair. To the various shape swords, axes and other lurid implements of pain. And, each figure completely distinct from the next. Several guards watch over kneeling prisoners. Some with heads bowed down in total submission. Chopping block with chain. One prisoner suffering under huge tablet-collar. The collar with two panels of engraved caligraphy. Perhaps outlining his (alleged) crimes. Another prisoner hanging in the centre of a tall cage as a guard with long rod looks on. Magistrate in long robe, seated behind a tall desk. Overseeing the gruesome scene. Supported upon the original, beautifully hand carved rosewood base. Elegant pierced leaf and vine panels along the base. The figures secured by long rods which fit into the base. Most of the figures are moveable. This allows the next owner to re-configure most of the scene. With seemingly endless variations on the position of many of the prisoners and guards. Providing hours of unusual entertainment. Alone, or with your "special" collector friends. This perhaps one of a kind, late 19th century Chinese export silver miniature torture scene is 5 inches by 3 inches and 2 1/4 tall. The tallest figures are approximately 1 1/4 inches tall. In excellent condition. Rich, warm well aged silver patina. The beautifully carved guard and prisoner figures retain most all of their rich, vibrant detail. The original hand craved rosewood base is in fine state, less 1/8th inch section missing (must hunt to find). Stand with rich dark patina throughout. Chain broken at chopping block. Perhaps indicating a piece is missing. Few of the hand cut fastners missing. Given the length of each figure's securing rod, these figures remain in place. Unsigned. Not unusual for 19th century China trade silver. For the discerning collector of the finest Chinese export silver. Focused upon creative, highly imaginative forms. A one of a kind late 19th century China trade silver torture chamber. Nothing like this is found in Forbes's text. Nor in the famed Chait and Chan collections.... Please feel free to inquire directly about this, or any item we've listed. Whether the item is alone or part of a set. We very much welcome your interest. We are collectors first. As such, we are quite easy to work with. We happily combine items when shipping, saving you costs. We ship twice weekly, usually US Postal Priority. Fully insured for domestic packages, and air parcel overseas. We charge a bit more than actual cost for custom size boxes, shipping materials and to pay for professional packing. We make great effort to accurately describe each item listed. Returns are accepted, if either condition, country of origin or dating is significantly incorrect. In such cases we refund your shipping costs as well. Like you, we are only human, and make mistakes. Hopefully, not too many. Remember, the items you see are antiques. Hence, have an expected amount of wear from normal use. As such, returning an item because we failed to mention the tiniest bit of wear, or barely discernible flaw is not acceptable. Nor do we accept returns based on buyer's remorse. Nor change of taste, or because a buyer did not realize how "small" four inches might be once in hand. Please note, Massachusetts residents are subject to sales tax. We have over 4205 feedbacks. And, are quite proud of our 99.9% rating. We received favorable notice in the March 12th, 2006 New York Times. Page 8, Business Section, in a well written article on silver collecting. Copy furnished upon request. From our personal collection, a fine mid 19th century coin silver basket by Edward & John Moore is illustrated in the cover article in May/June 2008 Silver Magazine. Enjoy....and good fortune in your bidding.
