Description
izabella2662 store Note: These are the lines of text in the slides. Antique Ottoman Calligraphy Implements a.A superb group of Ottoman Turkish calligraphy implements, Late 18th to Early 19th centuries, Turkey. Practicing the most respected of all art forms in Islam required fine tools, consisting of (from top): pen-rest (makta), sharpener (kalemtraº), scissors (makas), bamboo-reed pen (kam º kalem), burnishing tool (mühre). 2.Antique Ottoman Calligraphy Implements i.The individual items in this group of Ottoman Turkish calligraphy implements are all exemplary, and similar items can be found in many museums. Rather than separate the various items I decided to put them in one lot. Lovers of Islamic calligraphy will appreciate why, and will find these items can be a great enhancement to their collection. I will not sell the items separately. There are many sites that show collections from all over the world and one can read up further about each item in this lot to expand on the descriptions. I used the common Turkish names for all items, and variations in spelling can be found in Arabic and Persian languages. The Late 18th to Early 19th dating of the individual items makes this lot very desirable. Only one item, the ivory burnishing tool, is questionable about its function and age. Further research is needed on this item. Some astute collector may know. So please mail me if you can verify or dispute my descriptions. One thing is for sure, that all items are from Turkey. 3.Antique Ottoman Calligraphy Implements i.The makta, or pen-rest, was traditionally made of bone, ivory, mother of pearl or tortoise shell. This Early 19th century bone example has a mihrab shaped top with a nicely carved fretwork design. b.Nice fretwork at top or “head” of the makta. 4.Antique Ottoman Calligraphy Implements i.The raised and grooved lower portion of the makta is angled so that the reed’s nib angle and point could be cut consistently each time. b.The grooved “bed” or “pillow” for “resting” the reed pen. 5.Antique Ottoman Calligraphy Implements i.A variety of reed pens (kam º kalem) were used for each style of script. Bamboo pens were used for very thin lines. The nibs were trimmed on a "makta," or pen-rest. This is a late 19th century example. The cylindrical reed pens’ points were cut for the hand of the calligrapher and for the style of script to be used. 6.Antique Ottoman Calligraphy Implements i.The sharpener (kalemtraº) is made of “damascus steel,” a hot-forged carbon steel. It has an extremely sharp blade used to cut and form (sharpen) the nib of the pen. This late 18th century example has a later bamboo handle. b.The blade has an illegible maker’s mark stamped on one side. 7.Antique Ottoman Calligraphy Implements i.The bamboo-reed pen is placed the pen-rest, aligning the end in the “bed’s” groove; then tip is trimmed to the desired thickness with the knife. The tapered bed groove guides the blade to provide a consistent angle to the nib. 8.Antique Ottoman Calligraphy Implements i.The scissors (makas) are made of hollowed steel blades with bronze handles. This Late 18th century type, with long straight cutting edges, was used specifically for cutting paper. b.Length: 10 15/16" (27.9 cm.) 9.Antique Ottoman Calligraphy Implements i.The handle of the scissors is in the form of two facing inscriptions reading 'Ya Fattah' ('O He Who opens!'), one of the 99 Names of God meaning 'God is the opener of all doors.' b.The steel blades are damascene inlaid gold with intricate floral motifs. 10.Antique Ottoman Calligraphy Implements i.The burnishing tool (mühre) was used for sizing the paper. Typically a baulbus shape and made to fit the palm of the hand, it was made of jade, glass or agate. This pointed piece of ivory might have been used to draw blind impression lines on paper and the round end for burnishing gold leaf. Note the scorched ends. Ivory does not burn when heated. It was heated to make the gold adhere better to the paper. This is probably from the Late 19th to Early 20th centuries. b.Size: 3 ½" x 3/8" (8.9 x 1.0 cm.) 11.Antique Ottoman Calligraphy Implements The items in this collection of calligraphy implements are in very good condition, commensurate with their ages. The only thing I can point out is that one of the blades of the scissors has a very small chip at the tip. For international shipping, please see below. Great GIFT.
