Hokusai (1760 - 1849) Japanese Woodblock Reprint SetComplete Set "Thirty-six Views of Fuji" Set (46 oban woodblock prints) Hokusai and the Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji- At age 69, the great Hokusai launched the most challenging project of his artistic career, the print series "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji." This series was then and is still today, the most acclaimed landscape series of ukiyo-e. Hokusai combined his ingenious design sense with a series of prints embracing the power, beauty and symbolism of Mt. Fuji -- Japan's sacred mountain. Whatever the setting, Fuji stands serene and unmoved by changes in the natural or human condition. This contrast between endurance and transients deeply touched the audience of these prints. The mountain appears in all conditions; dawn, sunset, mist, rain, snow, from far away and nearby always a serene symbol of the beauty and power of Japan. This incredible series is an especially impressive accomplishment for a 69-year-old man. Hokusai was an artist with great energy, an uncompromising ego, boundless imagination and extraordinary talents. He kept the same level of youthful passion and spirit well into his late years- a fantastic accomplishment in an extraordinary man. Hokusai is said to have battled poverty throughout his life. He was often destitute. In a letter in 1836 addressed to an acquaintance, he reveals his problems - "At the end of last year, I had difficulty getting enough clothes. An old man of 76 is trying to bear the cold in one linen garment. Please imagine all the other difficulties." Unlike masters of the prestigious school of paintings who lived in relative luxury, ukiyo-e artists were not well-paid. Thus, despite his incredible talent, Hokusai's works did not receive their due until long after his death. Hokusai died on May 10 of 1849. On his deathbed he is said to have pleaded for more time to work on art, "If heaven will grant me the 10 more years of life, with even five more years, I could become a true artist." His funeral took place the next day paid for with money contributed by pupils and old friends. The end of an extraordinary life of a great artist recognized today as one of the great artists of the centuries. This Complete 36 Views of Fuji Set-  This is a terrific opportunity to collect a complete set of all 46 woodblock prints of Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Fuji in a beautiful old release. These sets are rarely sold complete. Most dealers sell off the prints individually as they bring a much higher price that way. But, we wanted to maintain this beautiful set and offer a collector the opportunity to have a complete woodblock print set of Hokusai’s masterwork series. Have a look at the examples in the link above. The complete series is a breathtaking artistic accomplishment. This beautiful set is a great example of the wonderful old reprints produced to the highest standards of woodblock printing. Additionally, as they are older prints, they have a wonderful sense of age to the paper that gives them a look close to Hokusai’s originals. This set comes complete with all 46 prints in full oban size (exactly as Hokusai's original).   How were these prints done? These beautiful wood block reprints were done exactly as the originals. An artist carved a wood block, one for each color, and hand printed each print one color at a time. These old reprints are sought after for the meticulous attention to detail and color, rivaling the originals. As with Hokusai's original 36 Views of Fuji release, our set is made up of 46 prints total. Each print is slipped into its original windowed presentation folder and can easily be removed for display. The windowed folders include numbered tissue covers, print 29 is missing this cover. The set is then stored in a handmade silk covered collection box (as shown in photo). It is 100% intact as originally produced. This is a great opportunity to collect a beautiful, complete reprint set of Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Fuji. Artist Signature, print and series titles- Each print is signed Hokusai and has the individual station title and 36 Fuji series titles (these old reprints are copied exactly with signatures and seals matching the early prints)Size- 15" x 10" + full margins as shownCondition- This set and each print in excellent condition overall as shown with no holes, tears, or repairs to report (see photo gallery for examples from this set.) The prints are printed with lovely color emulating the originals and excellent detail. No stains, holes or damage. These prints have not been framed or displayed. Collecting these old reprints- Collectors dream of owning and enjoying some of the most famous, historic, and beautiful Japanese print images of all time. While the works of Utamaro, Harunobu, Choki, Hokusai and Hiroshige are known to many, the cost of old originals is prohibitive to all but a few. Famous old prints sell for thousands, tens of thousands and sometimes, hundreds of thousands of dollars. Purchasing a fine old reprint is an exciting and gratifying way to collect beautiful old prints at a small fraction of those costs.
