Description
10Th - 11Th Century Buddhistic Style Lion The Lion is one of Buddhism's most potent symbols. Traditionally, the Lion is associated with Regality, Strength, and Power. It is therefore an appropriate symbol for the Buddha. This Buddhistic Lion is of Chinese origin, but made in an export style that is clearly Thai in nature. This Song Dynasty export piece would most likely have been made in the famous kilns of Ci-Zhao, as the the remaining black glaze will attest. Originally this piece would have been fully black-glazed, and the parts unaffected by years of burial still retain their 'Hares Fur' black coloring. Under microscopic examination, some original tree roots, and old root tracks, can still be seen, along with the accompanying degradation; roots have eaten through the glaze and even into the clay body. This exquisite example is in perfect 100% in-situ condition, and has never been broken, repaired, or re-fired, and there are no hairlines, cracks or breaks. Portions of the surface are bare clay body, where the black glaze has worn off naturally, as a result of prolonged burial. A wonderful example of the marriage of two fabulous cultures. Dimensions: 10" high, 4-1/4" wide, & 7" deep. This Lion was purchased from an old, living Tucson estate collection of very high-end porcelains, stoneware and objets d' art. This piece has also been authenticated by Dr. Timothy Jones, PhD, Anthropologist, formerly with the University of Arizona. Dr. Jones has accepted invitations to the world's largest museum in Beijing, and has received privately guided tours of the Beijing Museum, which included some of the most treasured vault items hidden away from the general public. Dr. Jones has directed the excavations and analyses of more than 20 major sites and 40 archaeological surveys. Dr. Jones now runs his own appraisal and authentication business, and is certified RPA-IAA. Dr. Jones can be reached at 520-744-2766. He helps in the verifications of all our later porcelains, as I do for him on the older items of Jades and pottery. He has no vested interest in our business, and we just truly enjoy each others company and knowledge.
