An unusual carved item from the Trobriand Island made from a large log of hardwood 690mmx 300mm (27inx 12in)and carved in one piece .The carving starts with a solid circular piece 300mm dia supporting 5 carved figures holding up the center table 300mm dia which in turn supports a larger figure holding two carved bowls approximately 150mm dia x 30mm deep. The planning of the total finished article and carving of these objects shows the expertise and skills of the Trobriand Islanders carvers who are renowned for their workmanship.The timber used is Kwila a solid and dense hardwood that retains its shape over many years ,this particular item collected in the early seventies still retains its original shape and appearance, the overall size is listed above and weighs approximately 10kg (22lb)The item is in good condition.
