Description
An original map from the scarce First Edition of the Atlas of Canada: Sheet 1 - Territorial Divisions This is the flagship map of the atlas, and the only political map covering all of Canada.   Provenance The Atlas of Canada, First Edition. Prepared under the direction of James White, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Geographer. Book No. 3659.  Each first edition atlas was individually numbered. Published Ottawa:  Department of the Interior, Canada. Honorable Frank Oliver, Minister. 1906. Size / Format In millimetres (and inches) Double Sheet: 625 x 441  (24½" x 17¼") The margin widths on the maps from this atlas vary widely. See the scanned image of each map for details. These maps were all 'tipped in' to the atlas, meaning that they could be removed as a single intact sheet. The double-sheet maps have a single fold in the center. The maps are lithographs printed on one side only by the "Toronto Lithographing Company, Ltd., Map Engravers." in 1906. Condition These maps are very good condition. Unless otherwise noted in red, there are no significant marks or soiling, no tears, and no foxing whatsoever. The maps are untrimmed and are suitable for framing.  Remarks Canada was among the first countries to publish a 'national atlas.' This first edition made extensive use of the 1901 census and was the definitive source of information about Canada's economic and political geography, infrastructure, demography, and natural resources. Since then, four more editions of the atlas have been published. In 2006, Canada Post issued a series of stamps to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the atlas. The Canadian Ministry of Natural Resources maintains an extensive website about the atlas. It's worth a visit:  Atlas of Canada Website The first edition of this atlas has become difficult to find, at any price. I was lucky to find this one from a book seller in the U.K., who had himself bought it from a university library in York, England. By the time it came into my hands, the book was in three pieces. The maps, however, were all intact and unscathed. Many of the maps are almost like bold modern art. In many maps, the colors are so rich that you can literally feel the ink on the page with your finger. Any of the maps I'm listing from the atlas would look great framed, and hanging one (or a pair) would definitely draw attention. Owning a map from this atlas is owning a valuable historical document.  I will include a copy of the title page (pictured below) with all shipments.     SHIPPING All shipments are insured against loss or damage. In the rare event that your item is damaged or doesn't arrive at all (this has only happened twice, out of 500+ shipments) we'll look after the insurance claim for you. Easy. We offer at least one shipping option that is completely free for our U.S. customers, and we subsidize shipping costs by an equivalent discount for our Canadian and overseas customers. We encase our prints and maps in new acid-free clear plastic bags before shipping. However, we do re-use shipping materials whenever possible. So the mailing tube you receive your map in, or the rigid cardboard backing in the envelope you receive, may have been used before. If presentation is important for you (if it is a gift, for example), let us know and we'll use spiffy new materials only for your shipment. We use Canada Post to ship most items and we are well-versed in all the rates and options for the U.S., Canada and Overseas. We combine shipping. Usually three or four similar items can be shipped for the price of one. There is no 'per item' charge. Note that, since we are located in Canada, shipping to the U.S. takes longer than it does between two points within the U.S.  We ALWAYS ship within one working day of receiving payment, and often ship the same day; however, we have no control over how long it takes from there. If you require an expedited delivery, just let us know and we’ll present you with some faster (and more expensive!) options. Sellers' fees are now tied to detailed seller ratings. Please remember that we are shipping from a foreign country, and that we ship at a loss, when you leave feedback about shipping times and / or costs. Delivery to the United States   - FREE letter mail delivery of smaller maps and prints.   - FREE Insured surface mail with basic tracking for larger maps and prints. Upgrade to airmail (still rather slow) for $4.95.   - Courier services are available at cost. Just  ask. Standard: 7 - 15  business days. For our standard, free, delivery we use Canada Post's small parcel ground service. The service is reliable, but it can be quite slow.  As we are located in Montreal, delivery to the Eastern part of the country is quicker than to the West. Expedited:  4 - 10 business days. This uses either Canada Post's letter mail services (small maps and prints) or small parcel air service. It is faster than standard, but not as fast as regular mail between two points in the U.S. If you need your item within a few days, just ask us. We'll present you with courier rates at cost. Note that any courier / express services will cost at least $20.00. Delivery to Canada - FREE letter mail delivery of smaller maps and prints.   - Subsidized flat rates for all parcels / mailing tubes. Ontario & Quebec:  1 - 3 business days / All other provinces: 3 - 6 business days. If your map or print is small enough (not more than 13.5" long), we will send it for FREE  by Canada Post letter mail. For all other maps and prints, we use Canada Post's parcel services and offer subsidized rates (well below our actual cost). In answer to a frequent question from our compatriots:  Yes, it really, actually does cost more to ship small parcels within Canada than it does to send them to the U.S. or overseas. It costs less to send a mailing tube  to Tokyo or Timbuktu than it does to Yellowknife or Yarmouth. Delivery Worldwide   - Insured Airmail with basic Tracking.   - We subsidize shipping to the same $ value as we do for the U.S. and Canada.   5 - 15 business days. Rates are the same to all destinations outside Canada and the United States. Delivery is always by air and is insured against loss or damage. Delivery is often faster to Europe than it is to the United States (not sure why). Average delivery times are five business days to the UK & Western Europe, seven business days to Japan & Korea, and ten business days to Australia or South Africa. Registered mail is very expensive and is not necessary. All shipments are insured against loss (or theft) for up to $100 by Canada Post.   PAYMENT Payment is preferred within three days, and required within seven days. Non-paying buyers will be reported to Ebay. This is the only way we can recover the fees that Ebay charges us upon your agreement to purchase. We welcome bids and purchases from new Ebayers; however, if your feedback score is lower than 10 and you are bidding on (or have won) an item over $100, please send us a quick e-mail just to confirm that you are a serious buyer. GUARANTEE All the maps and prints we sell are originals with documented provenance. For atlas maps, you will receive a photocopy of the title page of the atlas from which it was taken. Any map or print can be returned for a refund with seven days of receipt. We'll refund your return shipping costs, too. Please advise us before returning any item. All shipments are insured against loss or damage. Contact us immediately if you have any questions about your item or are dissatisfied in any way. More maps from this atlas
