Even though the Bible recorded the births, deaths, and marriages of a prominent family (Jacobs) dating from 1878 in W. Virginia, I was told that because his wife's father was a minister, she had apparently been raised very strickly and as an adult wanted no connection with her past. I accepted it and have cared for it since 1977. In 1984 I sent it to a book binder in Atlanta and paid $60 to have the cover restored. As the 1st picture shows, the front cover has since deteriorated (I would rate it a 6 of 10) on the front leather plate, but the spine and back are in excellent condition (9 of 10 for back and 10 of 10 for the spine). The book binder told me that this family Bible was the first American printing of the American Standard translation side by side with the King James version. This is a very large Bible measuring 10.5" x 12.5" and weighing approximately 12 pounds. All the pages are intact - as I relayed earlier the spine and pages are in excellent condition. Pages are browned slightly from aging. There are no torn pages. A few of the outside corners (1/4") are missing. It has a feature article titled "The Tabernacle" in the front with five colored pictures, a "Department of Reference: containing Chronological And Other Valuable Tables, Compends of Historical Facts, Maps, and Other Data." It contains a "Comprehensive Bible Dictionary", "Aids to Bible Study", A "Self-Pronouncing Dictionary", many full page drawings depicting well known Bible stories, a concordance, and the family picture album pages with color marriages, births, and deaths, pages.
