Beautifully Illustrated and Illuminated Arabic Manuscripts. #1. al-Jazūlī, `Abd Allāh Muhammad Ibn Sulaymān Ibn `Abd ar‑Rahmān Ibn Abū Bakr (died 870 of the Islamic calendar, corresponding to 1460 AD). DALĀ'IL AL-KHAYYIRĀT (Guide to Good Deeds). This is one of the most famous books of prayer in Islamic literature. Folios 1b – 99a; in beautiful, elegant, and clear naskhī script, in black ink, with headings, keywords, and markings in red ink, 11 lines to a page. The Arabic text is completely vocalized. All pages are ruled in several lines of gold and blue throughout. All sentences are separated in circles in gold, blue, and red. The opening pageis illuminated in gold, blue, and red, other colors. Pages 13b and 14a contain two full‑page, miniatures, one of them representing the Ka`bah in Mecca, the other the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad in the Medina Mosque. Leaves 13a, 16a, 34b, 77a, and 99a are illuminated with head or tail pieces in gold, blue, and red and other colors. Folio 14b, 15a, and 15 contains full pages of the shoes of the Prophet and his mantle. For al-Jazūlī, see GESCHICHTE DER ARABISCHEN LITTERATUR, SUPPLEMENT, II, 359. #2. Followed by: al-Barzanjī, Ja`far Ibn Hasan Ibn `Abd al-Karīm (died 1187 of the Islamic calendar, corresponding to 1764 AD). AL-`ARĪN LI ASMĀ' AS-SAHĀBAH AL-BADRIYYĪN (The Lair of the Names of the Badri Companions). These are the names of the Prophet's companions, who accompanied him in the Battle of Badr, one of the early battles, which the pagans waged against the Prophet Muhammad, and in which the Muslim came out victorious. These names became very important in prayer books and in Arabic and Islamic literature in general. Folios 99b – 140b; in beautiful, elegant, and clear naskhī script, in black ink, with headings, keywords, and markings in red ink, 11 lines to a page. All sentences are separated in circles in gold, blue, and red. Leaves 99b, 117b, and 118b are illuminated with head or tail pieces in gold, blue, and red and other colors. Folio 118 has a full-page miniature of roses in gold and colors. Both manuscripts are uniformly written by the same scribe. Size: 10.6 x 15.8 cm; written surface: 5.2 x 10.1 cm; on beige paper. It was copied by as-Sayyid al-Hājjī `Abd ar-Rahmān al-Qonawī (al-Konevi, i.e. from the Turkish city: Konya) and completed on the 1st of Muharram 1171 AH/ 15th September 1757 AD. Contemporary tan morocco, with a flap in the style of Islamic binding, both covers are blind stamped with central medallion, front cover slightly soiled otherwise an excellent copy.
