Beaded basket headdress, ElephantType of Object: artifact, Dance headdressEthnic Group: unspecified, Cameroon GrassfieldsCountry of Origin: CameroonMaterials: Reed, beads, fabric Approximate Age: Mid 20th century Dimensions: height 10 in, long 9 in Overall Condition: Good Damage, Repair: None Additional Information: Headdress made with handwoven fabric, with trade beads. The frame is made out of reed basketry. This headdress was probably used as other Bamileke beaded elephant masks in the Kuosi society ceremonies. Kuosi is a regulatory society formed by members of royalty to enforce the laws and tradition. The elephant and also leopard are the animals related to this society and connected with the power and wealth of the kingship. These two animals have become the icons of this society represented by the masks and their designs. On this image the projecting form in the front represents and the large circular ears to the head represent are associated to the elephant. The triangle designs on the bottom represent de leopard's spots.
